Does anyone know how to do it? I looked and didn't see how .. it's probably right under my nose and it'll make me feel silly when someone tells me. *grumble , grumble*

Assuming you have Windowblinds installed...in Display Proproperties you will see a button marked 'Advanced'. In the screen that pops up you will see 'User Overrides' and simply uncheck 'Show User Icons (if not domain)'.
